The County Council passed Bill 52, Restricting the Use of Single-Use Plastic Foodware. The Bill changes peoples' behaviors toward using recyclable options, and stop plastic pollution in our island environment. I was honored to shepherd this Bill for the benefit of future generations.
In 2019, I proposed an Archeologist position for the County. The shortfalls at the State level (SHPD), proved that we cannot adequately protect and preserve culturally significant sites including ancient burials. I am happy to say that we just hired our own Archeologist for this purpose.
This Covid-19 pandemic has revealed how vulnerable we are, should we need to sustain ourselves. The Council has allocated $2.5 million for micro-grants for small farmers. To fund more Agriculture production on island, I plan to introduce a Department of Agriculture to establish food security efforts for years to come.
Our water resources are important components to consider when strategically planning for our future. It is imperative that we establish policies that protect watersheds, provide for agriculture and address equity for native populations. The adage 'E Ola i Ka Wai' speaks to the importance of water usage in our everyday lives.
Tourism is one of Maui County's greatest economic driver. However, we want to ensure that tourism does not negatively impact our neighborhoods, roadways and natural environments. Keeping a healthy balance will ensure that our visitor industry contributes to maintaining critical public infrastructure for everyone's enjoyment.
Maui County has been in an Affordable Housing crisis for several years now. This past term has been spent working to fix this problem. There is a charter amendment to increase funding for affordable homes by 1%. The Council also worked hard to subsidize housing for the 80% AMI and below; and to increase affordability to 30 years and beyond to prevent homes from being flipped out of affordability after 10 years.
The State of Hawaii has an impending date of 2025 to reach Alternative Energy capacities, and HECO has already released RFPs for such plans. Solar and Wind farms are planned throughout the islands, and it is important that public and environmental health is our priority as we move to a greener future.
